The viral hook
formula

The first 3 seconds decide everything. Here's exactly how to write a hook that stops the scroll and earns you the algorithm.

71%

of viewers decide in the first 3 seconds

85%

of social video is watched without sound

more impressions at 65%+ retention

The algorithm watches first

At 500 views, your fate is sealed.

The platform decides in your first 500 views whether to push your content to thousands — or bury it forever. Your hook is what determines which happens.

Hook retention

300+ keep watching past second 3

What this means: Of your first 500 viewers, you need at least 50 likes, 5 shares, and 300 people watching past your hook. Miss any one and the algorithm won't push further.

02

The hook breakdown

What actually happens in the first 10 seconds

A hook isn't just an opening line — it's a 3-part sequence that works together to earn the watch.

  1. 01

    Seconds 0 – 3

    The pattern interrupt

Your opening frame must visually or audibly break the scroll. Bold text on screen, a surprising visual, or a statement the viewer didn't see coming.

Don't start with "hey guys" — start with the most interesting thing you're going to say in the entire video.
  2. 02

    Seconds 3 – 7

    The promise tease

Bridge the hook to the content. Tell them why they should stay. Open a curiosity gap — hint at what they'll get without giving it all away.

And by the end of this, you'll know exactly what I did to grow from 0 to 10k in 30 days.
  3. 03

    Seconds 7 – 10

    The lock-in

Transition into your first real piece of value. If they're still watching at 10 seconds, they'll usually watch 50–70% of the video. You've won.

Step one. This is the thing I see beginners skip every single time…

Retention is ranking fuel. Every second someone watches past your hook, the algorithm learns your content is worth distributing. The 60% retention target means 60% of viewers make it to at least second 3.

The playbook

7 hook formulas that actually work

Copy these. Fill in the brackets. Post. These are the patterns behind millions of viral videos.

01

The curiosity gap

Highest retention

Exploits the brain's need to close incomplete loops.

Nobody talks about [uncomfortable truth] — and it's costing you [relatable loss].
  • Nobody talks about this creator mistake — and it's costing you thousands of views a day.
  • The thing nobody tells beginners about Instagram growth — and it took me 2 years to figure out.
02

The bold claim

High share rate

An audacious promise that triggers both skepticism and hope.

I went from [relatable start] to [aspirational result] in [believable timeframe]. Here's how.
  • I went from 0 followers to 50k in 90 days without spending a dollar on ads. Here's the system.
  • I gained 10,000 Instagram followers in 30 days posting once a day. Here's every step.
03

The unpopular opinion

High comment volume

Triggers an emotional response — comments and shares explode when people disagree.

Unpopular opinion: [widely believed thing] is actually [contrarian take]. Here's the data.
  • Unpopular opinion: posting every day is actually killing your growth. Here's why.
  • Unpopular opinion: viral hooks don't matter as much as THIS — and creators don't want to hear it.
04

The direct address

Best watch time

Calls out a specific person — makes the viewer feel seen.

If you're a [specific audience] who wants [specific outcome], stop scrolling — this is for you.
  • If you're a beginner creator with under 1,000 followers, stop scrolling. This one is for you.
  • If you've been posting for months and still not growing — watch this to the end.
05

The list / number hook

Easy to execute

Sets a clear expectation — viewers stay to collect the complete list.

[Number] mistakes [target audience] make that are [consequence]. Number [X] is the one I see everywhere.
  • 5 mistakes new creators make that kill their reach before they even get started. #3 is the one I see every single day.
  • 3 things I would never do again if I was starting my content journey from scratch.
06

The story hook

High watch time

Humans are wired for narrative — we stay to find out what happened next.

So I [surprising action] and what happened next actually [emotional payoff].
  • So I deleted all my social media for 30 days and what happened to my business actually shocked me.
  • Story time: I posted one video, woke up the next day, and my life was genuinely different.
07

The question hook

Curiosity-driven

Open loops in the brain demand closure — a question keeps them watching for the answer.

Why do [top creators] [counterintuitive thing] while everyone else [expected thing]?
  • Why do the biggest creators on this app post LESS content while everyone else burns out posting daily?
  • Why does this one type of content get 10x the views with half the effort — and nobody's talking about it?
04

Protect your retention

7 rules for 60%+ hook retention

Writing a great hook is step one. These rules keep people watching long enough for it to matter.

01

Never start with an intro

"Hey guys, welcome back to my channel" kills retention instantly. Your hook is your intro. Start with your most interesting sentence.

02

Match your visual to your hook

Your opening frame should reinforce the words. If you say "this changed everything," show the result on screen — not your face setting up a camera.

03

Cut every word you don't need

Every extra word in a hook is a reason to scroll. Aim for 10 words or fewer in your opening statement. Tighter is stronger.

04

Design for mute — and for sound

85% of social video is watched without sound. Put your hook in bold text on screen. Watch your own hook on mute — if it doesn't communicate value silently, fix the visual first.

05

Deliver on the promise — fast

If your hook teases "the secret to going viral," give a real tip by second 30. Broken promises mean instant drop-off and a battered trust score with the algorithm.

06

Add a mid-video re-hook

At 30–40% into your video, drop a secondary hook: "And the most important thing? I'll share that at the end." It re-engages people who are about to scroll.

07

Test 3 hooks per idea

Write 3 versions of every hook before you record. Pick the one that makes you slightly nervous to say — that's usually the strongest one.

05
